LookWAYup

Screen Shot LookWAYup is an add-on tool that brings and links together the convenience of an on-line dictionary and that of an advanced search tool. With a double-click you can look-up the meaning of a word, or a phrase, search it on the page or the whole Web using your favorite search engine, check whether books have been written on the subject, and more ! All that without leaving the Web page.

This web site provides LookWAYup, a convenient and powerful new way to find definitions and related information without leaving the web page. There is nothing to download or install!

Help using LookWAYup

On the page where you were, just double click on a word. This highlights the word and at the same time brings up the LookWAYup window. If you're on a Unix, or using an older browser, double-clicking doesn't automatically highlight a word. You can double click and then highlight the word by dragging the mouse over it.

If you want to look up a 2-word phrase, like "mineral oil", highlight the word or term by dragging the mouse over it, then press the "enter" key.

More on this subject

This section deals with the selected word, in the context of the page where it was found. LookWAYup sometimes suggests some links with information or products related to the you have selected or its context. It uses intelligent technology that tries to match concepts found on that page with concepts in that link.

If the term you have looked up has several meanings, it is possible that the links are related to another meaning of the word. If you then select one meaning of the word, by following a "More..." link, it will narrow down the available links to the correct meaning of the term. Books

For your convenience, you can search for books related to the specific term being searched or related to other important terms found on the page. Just press the appropriate link. Search LookWAYup gives you one-click intelligent search using popular search engines. Clicking this site lets you intelligently find the selected term in other pages on the same web site. Clicking the Web lets you lets you intelligently find the selected term in other pages on the World Wide Web. Notice that the search is not just for the term that you highlighted, but also for the context of the type of page on which you were looking. The same intelligent search can be done using a variety of popular search engines, including AltaVista, Google, Yahoo, Lycos and HotBot.

Dictionary

The handiest part of LookWAYup is a one-click lookup of the dictionary definition of the term. The term is reduced to singular or present tense to find its definition. If a term can have several meanings, all are listed. When LookWAYup is reasonably sure which is the correct meaning in this context, it shows it first and marks it with an asterisk (*). The part of speech is shown in square brackets:

[a] adjective
[r] adverb
Other parts of speech, such prepositions, conjunctions, and pronouns, are not used by LookWAYup.

Following this link lets you explore relationships between concepts. You can look up synonyms, terms having exactly the same meaning.

You can find more general or more specific terms. You may find a variety of relationships among terms, including examples and opposites.

Extended Search

Is one-click intelligent search still not enough? If you follow a "More..." link, "Extended Search" will automatically add many of the most important synonyms and related terms to the search. That way, you can find pages on the web that don't even contain the term you've highlighted, as long as they contain a related term.

Look up

Use LookWAYup to look up a word that you haven't highlighted. Just change or type the word in the box, then press the "Look up" button.

Put it on your browser!

The LookWAYup software is provided to you free of charge. On the page you were just looking at, there is nothing for you to install. But you can also use LookWAYup on any web page. Just find "Put LookWAYup on your browser!" at the bottom of the LookWAYup box. It takes about a second to install. There is no software to download, no rebooting.

Instructions to Parents

Like any dictionary, LookWAYup provides definition for some slang and vulgar words. While it is not our policy to censor the English language, some software such as Net Nanny can be configured to filter these out. Most of the search engines that LookWAYup links with have some type of a family filter, including Alta Vista, Google, Yahoo, and Lycos. It is up to you to configure these so that objectionable web sites are filtered out.
